Business Exploration

Uuummmm…. A deep thought. What does business exploration mean in the shadow of economic depression, foreclosures, destitute employers, and now the crash, ‘did you say that again, ugh’ of the stock market?

Business is the process of delivering services to others that you know more about. Let’s keep it plain and simple. I know how to fix your sink, you have a broken sink, I can come and fix that sink. Now let’s look at this differently. I am your neighbor who can help you fix your own sink. Is that a business? It is a business/barter transaction. Your knowledge you transferred to someone else to let them help themselves now and future. Note: this is NOT a self help, it is a transfer of knowledge. Fabulous.

So, how can we look at the community and see it through the eyes of business exploration? We can see what we do have to give and develop a list of our assets, our knowledge. Ahhh…….exploration from the old processes to the new. But are they really new? Some would say no, it was done in the early 1900’s and earlier however it was very limited in the levels of knowledge. Let’s take all the generations of knowledge and experience and make life changes now.

How does this look? Here is an example: I was a dental hygienist for thirty years. I have worked in over fifteen practices. What I have seen, heard and been told to do, you would shudder!! So now the paradigm: when patients come into the office, ask them how they are doing, offer a hand or a hug, keep direct eye contact, listen and hear, then provide services they are ready for, (remember, this may differ from the services they were scheduled for or needing)just listen and help. I can vividly remember one dentist I worked for and I do not need to provide his name on the wall of shame, he will know when he reads this: His statement: “do not talk to the patient and hear his life story and never ever give that person a hug”. The patient that day had just lost her husband two weeks prior and she was poor and alone. She did not want to ‘disappoint’ the dentist and not come to her cleaning appointment. Conclusion: I got reprimanded and left that office in a matter of months. The patient got her cleaning and still got all the empathy I could give on the ‘slide’. The dentist got to feel like a pompous person. What was worse, after the patient left, he ran up to the front desk and asked if the patient paid her bill in full. He was told yes and he stated, ‘write on her chart to always get payment in full prior’. If you do not believe your practitioners are doing this, think again, it is rampant in over 70% of all healthcare professions.

Restructure business means to take the $$$$ out of your eyes. See what is important. If I have to work til 7pm for patients to ‘make the money’ and cannot make the baseball game, who did this shortchange? Your child is the most important and that will be felt for a lifetime. Let’s take the money that came in, estimate $200.00 and you just paid a nanny $100.00 to stay an extra four hours. In addition, $100.00 to take your child to a fast food place or restaurant for the dinner meal that you did not prepare. Now at 9pm you have a wired child on processed food and you just got home from work. Fun?? No. You are in control.

Let’s look at our business and see what can be altered to benefit all, not the $$.
